Mt. Rainier Sunset (Sleeping Giant)

Mt Rainier Sunset and Lake Samm 2.JPG

Mountains are interesting opposites of many things we view. While most things are viewed better the closer we get, a mountain is more beautiful from afar, and ironically almost invisible up close. The closer you get to a mountain the less you can actually see of it. Yet when you climb it the more you can see of the rest of the world.

There are few things in nature that express so much as a single mountain covered in snow, and reflecting the setting sun. From it’s sheer size, it’s majesty, and it’s beauty, there are many reasons mountains are so impressive.

Perhaps that is why mountains are such metaphors for life. We often express other events and happenings in terms of mountains. We tell people, “not to make a mountain out of a mole hill”, or suggest that “we should climb high”, and suggest “climb to the top” in business and athletics.

In this photo of Mt.Rainier, as the sun set and the day came to a close, I was reminded of all of the above and more. Mt. Rainier is part of the Cascade Volcanic Range, and I wondered as it went to sleep, would it come alive tomorrow? I said goodnight to the sleeping giant, and wished it pleasant dreams.
