Modern Pterodactyl

New Heron.jpg

No matter how many times I see the Great Blue Heron I am still reminded of the Jurassic era Pterodactyl.

These birds with their long necks and massive wingspan seem as if they should not be able to fly. But of course they do. And as I observe them and photograph them I can’t help but think of what an interesting bird, with it’s long beak, long legs, and long neck, but such a short tail. Somehow, it always seems as if its creator forgot to give it one.

As this Heron took flight I especially enjoyed all that I was able to capture. From the birds beautiful color changes in its wings and neck and head, to the water droplets coming off of its legs, and the reflection in the water, this photo summed up the bird and its environment in a way that only a single photograph can.
